About Joyful Noise Concert Band
This is a new endeavor as of 2022, based on the New Horizons International standards. This is mostly a Concert Band, meaning any strings would work in with a Flex Band format of music. I hope to build up a group of all level musicians who simply want to enjoy putting sounds together well (at some point) and possibly let some public places enjoy our fruits of labor.
Expect some ‘work in progress’ sessions for a bit as we get our structure and musicianship leveled up! Don’t be shy, ALL levels of players are welcome!
Our Director – Larry Schnitzer
Larry Schnitzer recently retired as the Head of Wind and Percussion Studies at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas.
A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, bands and orchestras under Mr. Schnitzer’s direction earned 26 UIL Sweepstakes awards while winning 19 contests at both the regional and national levels in six different states.
During his tenure at Booker T. Washington HSPVA, the Wind Ensemble was chosen to be a feature performer in the “National Youth Concert Series” at Carnegie Hall in New York City, the UIL State Wind Ensemble Festival in Austin, and was named a national winner in the “Mark of Excellence” recording project. Prior to his appointment to the faculty at Booker T. Washington HSPVA, he spent 23 years as the Director of Bands at Naaman Forest High School in the Garland Independent School District.
Mr. Schnitzer is currently the conductor of the Joyful Noise Concert Band of North Texas, an adjunct professor of music at Dallas College Richland Campus, and a mentor teacher to several schools in the surrounding DFW Metroplex.
Founder – Hilary Meader
I am the creator of this particular group, however I am NOT a ‘master player’. I played flute in middle & high school many years ago (should have played trumpet), and my son who most recently graduated high school was the top trumpet player for his 7 years, an All State Jazz musician, and all around extremely skilled trumpet player. When he decided to play in the band in 6th grade, I reminisced about my lost band opportunities in high school (I switched to choir), and would get all misty-eyed at his concerts. I hoped one day to be able to play in a group again. And here it is!
I myself feel I’ll never be able to reach the performance level of the awesome local community bands, but welcome you to come hone your skills with us to get there, if it’ll help!
